Aegis Pod: a classy pod mod by Geekvape

For several months, especially due to the worldwide Covid-19emergency, the vaping market appears to be in trouble and in a strong and generalized slowdown, from the e-liquids segment to the hardware segment without any distinction whatsoever. In Italy, in a general climate of difficulty, probably the segment that is undergoing the greatest decline is above all that of Pod systems, whose unstoppable rise, has suffered a clear setback since the beginning of 2020. Despite the prolonged moment of crisis, the largest Chinese manufacturers continued to design new models to be launched on the market and today with the first timid flashes of recovery, I will return to tell you about the well-known brand Geekvape and with the occasion of its new Pod Mod, the Aegis Pod.

As usual, at the start of the article I report the contents of the packaging of the product received.

DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY

Aegis Pod is the latest creation and the smallest of Geekvape belonging to the successful and revolutionary Aegis series and, like the other products of this line, it retains the important characteristic of being a totally waterproof and shockproof device. Since the first device of the line, this is precisely the concept that Geekvape has continued to repeat like a mantra on Aegis devices: resistant to everything because they are indestructible. And the Aegis Pod certainly doesn’t want to be outdone.

In fact, the pod mod immediately shows its high build quality, appears robust in the hands while being compact and quite small. The device has a zinc alloy body with front leather inserts and two side bands in silicone, while the cartridge is in PCTG material. Geekvape in my opinion has managed to combine high construction quality, with a refined and at the same time ambitious, avant-garde and impactful aesthetic. The rectangular shape of the device guarantees an enviable portability, which is certainly not negligible when we speak about pod systems.

FEATURES

Aegis Pod measures 88.1 mm in length, is 40.3 mm wide, has a thickness of 18 and a weight of about 72 grams: numbers that testify and confirm the robustness and at the same time the portability of the device.

The battery is integrated and has a capacity of 800 mAh, at first sight well proportioned for the vaping powers for which the mod has been designed. Charging takes place via USB type-C port IP-67 (the first in the sector of vaping completely resistant to water). An indicator light on the fire button informs about the charging status and the remaining battery level during vaping. When charging, the light flashes red, then turns to green when charging is complete, and you think it takes only 25 minutes to get the Aegis Pod fully charged and ready to use!

The mod has a cartridge with a capacity of 3.5 ml inside which must be inserted the 0.6 ohm G. Coil in Kanthal A1, made specifically for this device. The manufacturer declares a fixed supply that does not exceed 18 watts and therefore on balance should correspond to a voltage of about 3.3 volts.

Aegis Pod is a device designed for easy and immediate use and therefore it hasn’t any type of function and adjustment. The only button on the mod, well positioned at the top of the battery, is used to turn the device on/off (five close clicks) and obviously to vape. On vape the led light on the fire button indicates the remaining battery level (green light charged between 100% and 70%, blue light 69%-31%, red light 30%-0%). Finally, there are some useful and common protection systems on the device: short circuit protection, low voltage, timeout 10 seconds and too high temperature.

The Pod is a smoked PCTG cartridge and allows an easy reading of the e-liquid quantity. The airflow is fixed through three small slots located on one side of the cartridge. The result is a vape not exactly MTL lovers, it’s a classic restricted flavor chasing vape. The mouthpiece is quite large and in my opinion it has good ergonomics but, after having tested dozens and dozens of pod mods, I must say that I had the opportunity to come across more comfortable mouthpieces on the lips.

Unlike almost all pod systems on the market, the Aegis pod does not have a system of magnets for anchoring on the mod, but it clips to the sides of the battery thanks to two side hooks. This system, if on the one hand allows the pod to fix on the battery perfectly and without the slightest movement, on the other it makes it very difficult to remove it, also due to a rather poor grip on the hand.

COILING, WICKING AND FILLING

As previously seen, this is a pod mod with replaceable headcoil and Geekvape has decided to use the plug & play system for replacing the coil inside the cartridge; no screwing/unscrewing but “only” three o-rings that guarantee perfect coil housing. For the coil removal, the manufacturer has inserted a tool in the product package that allows you to extract the coil from the cartridge without worries. The refill system is also very easy and functional, now widely used by the vast majority of manufacturers for this type of device; on the lower part of the cartridge, on the side, there is a silicone cap which, once removed, gives access to the large e-liquid filling hole.

PERFORMANCES AND FLAVOUR

The Geekvape circuit that manages the 800 mAh battery proved to be reactive during my tests and able to handle the battery life fairly well. I was able to register an autonomy of about 4.5 ml of e-liquid, which is not bad at all if you think above all that the complete refill cycle lasts only 25 minutes.

Not negligible indeed commendable the fact that the pod does not present any condensation problem, it really seems watertight! The draw, which as I said earlier is a classic restricted DL, is always very precise, linear and free of bubbling or unpleasant spit back. The puff is really satisfying in terms of vapor, a pity only for its excessive noise.

Regarding the aromatic performances of the G. Coil mesh-tech pod-Formula, it must be said that however satisfactory they may be, I cannot consider them among the best ever within this segment of vaping. I carried out my aromatic tests with two synthetic tobacco e-juices that I know very well and that I often use with these types of devices: Booms Classic by TNT Vape and Mexico by Dea Flavor.

Although G. Coil succeeded in making me perceive the different nuances present within these two e-liquids quite well, it also showed the clear tendency to amplify sweet tones, consequently losing some subtle aromatic notes.

TO CONCLUDE

Aegis Pod is a product that, although with some limitations (difficult removal of the pod, good but not excellent aromatic yield), in my opinion proves to be a very attractive device for new vapers, thanks above all to a more than ever simple use, all excellent portability and undoubted aesthetic impact. Attractive and elegant.
