Joyetech and its new and super compact Exceed Grip

It is not a Pod Mod but not even an AIO, it is called Exceed Grip and it is the latest product launched by Joyetech, the Chinese world leader in the e-cig manufacturing. The electronic cigarette sector is going through a phase of great vitality, above all for the range of entry level products which, under the pressure of the pod mod phenomenon, are experiencing a period of incredible commercial momentum, with a consequent enormous supply of device systems for new vapers. The current entry level systems, we strongly affirm, have an efficacy and performance that were unthinkable until five years ago.

As we said earlier, The Flavourist today will review the new product by Joeyetech, the Exceed Grip, not a pod mod or even an AIO, technically I think it is correct to label it as a Box Pod.

Let’s start immediately by listing the contents of this kit’s package as usual.

DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY

Despite being very light in the hand, the Exceed Grip is a very solid device built with extreme care, which in my opinion is perfectly finished. Its workmanship is excellent, from the side panels in glossy polycarbonate, to the central body in matt satined aluminum; also the activation button (in polycarbonate) has a good quality and it’s well set inside the aluminum body, and also the drip tip 510, to finish with the cartridge that contains the liquid is also really well done. Although it has the standard shape of a parallelepiped, the aesthetics of the Exceed Grip is valuable, both for its rounded and soft lines and for its graphic motifs, among which stand out the modern design and more than ever cool of the side panels, up to the aesthetic solution of the visible cartridge, which follows the perimeter of the box on one side.

In our opinion from the point of view of design and construction quality, the Exceed Grip has very few rivals!

FEATURES

The Exceed Grip immediately strikes for its dimensions: 74 mm long, 40 mm wide, 21 mm thick and a total weight of only 78 g (but I assure you that they seem less). Despite the small size and the almost insignificant weight, the device can count on an integrated 1000 mAh battery with a maximum output power of 20W (based on the coil or pod installed).

Looking at the cartridge/pod compartment, the Exceed Grip kit includes a pre-installed (replaceable) 0.4 ohm mesh coil cartridge, ideal for a restricted flavor chasing, and a pod with a 0.8 ohm mesh coil (not replaceable) for the a MTL vape. The latter also has a dry-hit protection system that stops itself when the cotton inside the coil is not sufficiently impregnated with liquid (flashing light on the body).

It’s so easy to operate with this device: switching on and off with the classic sequence of five close clicks of the fire button and pressing the same fire button to start the power (there is no automatic fire mode).

The indicator light on the aluminum body provides information on the status of the battery: white light for a battery level between 100% and 20%, red light for a charge level between 20% and 0%. The Device shows a steady red light when it is under charge; when the charge is complete the light goes out completely.

The supplied drip tip, is well housed thanks to a double o-ring on the battery body, has a 510 attachment and this in my opinion is a not irrelevant feature. We would like to congratulate with the choice of the manufacturer that, while not providing a second drip tip supplied, for example more suitable for a pure MTL, leaves the consumer the possibility of replacing it with any other 510 drip tip.

COILING, WICKING AND FILLING

The removal, insertion and refill system is identical for both types of cartridges mounted by the Exceed Grip. The cartridges are inserted/removed on the device simply by pushing them towards the battery body and/or pulling them towards you (the side of the cartridge with a raised line must face towards the battery body). It is an operation that is not at all problematic. The liquid refill is carried out by removing the silicone plug on the back of the pod/cartridge and inserting the e-liquid bottle beak . This operation is also very easy (extremely facilitated by the total transparency of the cartridges), except that the slot for the refill is not very large and, especially in the presence of high VG e-liquids, it’s necessary to not obstruct completely the filling hole, so that the air can escape freely during the refill. In this sense Joyetech should have thought of a second small hole for the air vent.

Regarding the replacement of the head coil inside the cartridge, the manufacturer has devised a relatively simple system. The cartridge must be turned upside down so that the head is facing upwards; at this point you need to rotate the small piece of metal that holds the head coil in place and then unscrew the head coil and replace it with a new one (remember to initialize it with a few drops of e-liquid on the visible cotton parts).

PERFORMANCES AND FLAVOUR

The Exceed Grip unlike many of its competitors does not have the ability to vary the output power, but this in my opinion does not affect the performance of the device at all; one would rather wonder how this feature is really useful considering that, in the vast majority of cases, the watt variations are minimal (generally 1-2 watts for a total range of max 4-5 watts). This is a simple and immediate device that technically works very well both in terms of circuit responsiveness and battery management. From my tests I can tell you that with one charge I managed to vape continuously for not less than 7 hours consuming about 6-7 ml of liquid.

With the 0.4 ohm Mesh Coil cartridge the puff is quite airy, a typical restricted flavor chasing puff. From an aromatic point of view, the EX-M 0.4 ohm Mesh Coil behaves excellently giving a very well-faceted and not too fat aroma. Remarkable is also the production of steam that Joyetech’s product manages to give us despite the powers are, let’s not forget, low. The only small flaw that must be registered for this cartridge with replaceable head coils is related to the metal plate for mounting/dismounting the coil itself which, after a close sequence of 3-4 puffs, heats up and transfers this heat over the whole part bottom of the box. The life cycle of these head coils is in the market average and as always relative to the type of liquid used. No power problems with VPG 70/30 liquids but I would like to loudly recommend the 50/50 for this device, in order not to compromise the durability of the head coil.

Also the tests performed with the pod installed with 0.8 ohm coil gave excellent results. The puff is only slightly less airy than in the previous case and honestly calling it an open MTL is a bit pretentious. If instead you replace the supplied drip tip with a more suitable one for MTL vape, the situation changes and you find yourself in front of a slightly airy MTL vape. The aromatic performances are excellent and very similar to those of the 0.4 ohm head coils and in any case sure better than many AIO or pod mods in circulation.

TO CONCLUDE

Although it is not exempt from some small defects, the Box Pod realized by Joyetech is in my opinion an entry level device (but also something more than a simple entry level) of excellent quality and with both technical and aromatic performances well above the average of its many competitors. The low price, its extreme simplicity of use, its manageability and portability and why not its design, make it at the moment one of the most valid entry level systems of 2019.
